On The Poetic Function Of Repetition

In a certain sense,literature is the knitting of composite repetition,and the formation in repetition.Therefore,as J.Hillis Miller said,in order to comprehend the text,you can,to a certain extent,identify the phenomenon of repetition to understand the meaning derived from it.It is also one of popular research methods,such as prototype theory,new criticism,structuralism and so on.In addition,there are a larger number of comprehension and interpretations about repeated phenomenon in concrete text.However,it must be pointed out that this doesn't mean that people have studied about repetition deeply.On the contrary,people tend to regard repetition as an effective tool which can only scratch the surface,but lack deep research about repetition itself.Besides,people tend to concentrate on the concrete repeated phenomenon in text,but lack probe and construction of universal theory about repetition itself.Therefore,up till now,people have lacked the deep probe and authoritative interpretation about the definition of the term repetition.Firstly,this paper will analysis and unscramble the concept of repetition in literature.From the view of poetics,it will sort out the connotation and denotation of repetition,establish the effective defining framework and make a proper remark.Secondly,the paper will discuss the weakness of theory of repetition,that is,the poetic function.In view of the complexity of derivative signification of repetition,the paper focuses on the way of derivative signification of repetition,that is,the basic poetic function.It will use the morphological approach in "Morphology of the Folk Tale",the work of Propp and "Basic Concepts of Poetics",the work of Staiger.From the tensional relationship between the repeat and repeated,the paper will infer three basic functional morphology:reproduction,irony and intertextuality.This three functions interlace with one another instead of opposing against one another.Any repeated derivative significance of poetics is the product of the three functions.The emerged force of the three functions is not balanced in concrete repetition,therefore,it will bring complexity of repeated significance.
