The Study On Repetition Of Russell Leong's Fiction

Russell Leong is a famous contemporary Chinese American writer.Though his works are few,they have made a great deal of achievement in ideological and artistic.Two literary works have been published,a collection of poetry named The Country of Dreams and Dust and a collection of short Stories called Phoenix Eyes and Olher Stories.The first work was awarded the 1994 Josephine miles prize in Oakland,and the second won the 2001 American book award.Leong's literary has made great achievements,but it has not been paid much attention by relevant academic study.I choose Leong as the research object of my graduation thesis,on the one hand,I am attracted by his literary works.on the other hand,I would like to help other people who want to research Leong's works in the future.Maybe my thesis can inspire othersMy thesis mainly refers to J.Hillis Miller's theory of "repetition" and Julia kristeva's theory of "intertextuality".When I am reading Phoenix Eyes and Other Stories carefully,I find Leong's work has a characteristics of the Repetition.So I want to analysis this characteristic in his work.How it takes effect and takes what effectThe innovation of My thesis is manifested in three aspects.First,it expands the existing boundaries of Leong's study.Existing researches in Leong's study often focus on two short stories,Phoenix Eyes and He Suo Bu Si?Based on the existing research,my thesis focus on Leong's other short stories such as Zhang Jia Nv Rr,Elementary Geography,and Non-Bruce Le.Second,the repetition is the one of key word in My thesis.By reading carefully and analyzing the repetition content appearing in Leong's fiction,I am trying to find out the functions of repetition in Leong's literary works,and these functions how to help Leong to express the fiction's theme.Third,the most of research on Leong's literature at present are focus on the theme of the fiction.These studies only pay a attention the storyline of the fiction,they neglect the artistic skills and aesthetic value in Leong's fiction.I think repetition is not only the expression of content in the fiction,but also the skill of design.My thesis will proceed from this artistic technique to reveal its specific performance in Leong's fiction.My thesis is mainly divided into three parts.The first part mainly discusses the relationship between imagery and repetition in Leong's fiction.Thcse specific images include the image of hair in Zhong Jia Nv Rr,the image of legs and feet in He Suo Bu Si,and the image of water in Elementary Geography.The author reviewed Hai Shan's life by repeating the description of hair imagery.The story finally shows the misfortune of Hai Shan's life,as well as the disillusionment and powerlessness of her efforts and hopes to get rid of this misfortune.The author answered the question of He Suo Bu Si by repeating the images of legs and feet.Chinese American living in the exotic environment of the United States are not accepted by mainstream society and feel lonely in mental.How to reconcile the relationship between Chinese and Western cultures?Leong put forward the idea of integrating Chinese and Western cultures,inheriting the past and continually integrating and innovating.The author reproduces Miles's homosexual love through the repetition of the image of water.In addition,he expresses his deeply sympathy for Miles Mai,whose love story also showed the destiny of the cycle of destiny.The second part mainly explores the relationship between structure and repetition.In the fiction narration,Leong not only complicates and three-dimensionally comprehends simple stories by adopting the writing strategies of time repetition and space repetition,but also expands the boundaries of the story,allowing the fiction to present much content and a wider world.In addition,time and space are no longer just containers for content in these fictions.They also contain profound content.The third part mainly analyzes the intertextual connection between Leong's fiction and other literature and culture.Leong's short story established an intertextual relationship with the singing-dancing Phoenix in Shan Hai Jing,and the image of Bruce Lee in Hollywood.He tried to make the Phoenix in traditional Chinese culture a symbol of homosexuality through this intertextual repetition writing.In this way,the public's prejudice against the homosexual human is eliminated;let the selfinterest Chinese to deconstruct the Hollywood-style Bruce Lee imagination,so as to break the Western stereotypes of the Chinese.
