An Inquiry On The Art Of Cui Zhi-yuan's Composition

Cui Zhi-yuan lived in Xinluo and he is the ancestor of Han literature in Korea. The connection between China and Korea was intimate. They are neighbours and due to this advantage, Han words appeared in korea a long time age. According to the historic classics The History of Three States and Epic Story of Gao Gou-li, the korean used Han words since the establishment of our country. We boast a classics Liu Ji with the volume of hundreds of scrolls. In B.C. fifty, Gao Gou-li was established. We conclude that about one century the korean had already used Han words to edit documents. At the same time, koreans began to compose Han poems. After Xinluo united the other two states, Han poems bloom in this prosperous country. To improve the culture and thoughts, Xinluo decided to dispatch hundreds of young men to study in the Tang Dynasty. They began to learn the sophisticated words and poems. Some of them participated in the national examination and proved to be brilliant poets. After the examination, the Tang government would nominate them as officials. Among these fabulous overseas students, Cui Zhi-yuan is one of the most outstanding. He shuttled between Xinluo and Tang Dynasty as ambassador. So he was admired by both governments and was a prestigious figure.As an overseas student in China, I think it a dismay that in Korea there is little research on the chinese classical poems. So I feel it's my responsibility to contribute to the fledging area. I am proud of Cui Zhi-yuan's poems and decide to choose his poems as the subject of this thesis.In the essay, I focus on the art of his composition. The introduction deals with the cause, the status quo and the value of this research. The first chapter begins with the history of Xinluo and its connection with Tang Dynasty. After this, it recounts the whole life of Cui Zhi-yuan. In the second chapter, it probes into Cui's eighty-two poems, about its reservation, genology and its content. Then it describes its features compared with other poems in the same period. As a foreigners, Cui was good at writing poems according to the routines which had developed into maturity in Tang Dynasty. I take the image Sea, image Rain and image Dusk as three examples. Further, the essay will analyse his characteristics as a classical poets. Generally speaking, his composition is common and mild. If we mix his poems with those of others, it's diffcult to spot the difference. In the Last chapter, I sum up Cui's effect on culture and literature in korea. Cui Zhi-yuan devoted his life to the friendship between China and Korea. Under the comparative view, I intent to clarify the features of Cui's poets and their relationship with other poems in Late Tang.
