Roland Barthes's life was dedicated to the study of text theory and text practice writing. Since the twentieth century, one of the characteristics features of western literary criticism theory is doubt the theory of traditional works and construct the new critical theory. The text theory is one of the most important critical theories during the structuralism to the post-structuralism. Criticism of old theories, exploration and practicing the new text critical theory, both are the basic areas of Roland Barthes's idea.This paper suggests Roland Barthes's text theory from the vertical and horizontal dimensions perspectives. Specifically, from the vertical perspective, according to the themes, lines and methods of Roland Barthes's study , his knowledge thinking is divided into three phases: the period before writing the text; the initial formation period of the text theory; the use and upgrade period of the text theory. From the horizontal perspective, comparing the Roland Barthes's theory with the traditional theory and the structuralist critical theory , display the uniqueness of Roland Barthes's theory. At a certain extent, Roland Barthes's text is also re-positioning the authors, readers and works to achieve the production of text meaning.Finally, this article summarizes the origin and background of Roland Barthes's theory in the whole.
