Whenever people start learning the language, they start with learning the vocabulary first. Vocabulary is the most basic raw material for building the huge structure called 'language' , and has important effect on the learning and usage of the language. If people who starts learning the language don't get enough understanding of the vocabulary, they can't express exactly what they want to mean, and also can't communicate in the language they learned. The students learning the foreign language also must understand the vocabulary. This is the essential process in mastering a foreign language. Some people say that learning enough vocabulary is the key-solution to the language problems, and the development of the grammar can even simplify the vocabulary problems.Chinese (language) lessons given in Korean high schools are for the beginners. Therefore, teaching the vocabulary should be the foundation and the core task of Chinese language education. Until now, the Chinese textbook used in Korean high schools are already at its 7th curriculum, and in the flow we can see the change, from focusing on memorizing things for the college entrance to strengthening the communication skill, in the Chinese language education system of Korea. Whether learners study the mother language or the foreign language, however, they must know big amount of vocabulary and be able to use them. Looking at the common features of the normal vocabulary education, we must learn the basic vocabulary of one language before we study the language, and also know the words that are frequently used in the daily life.According to the book published by Zhongguo duiwaihanyu jiaiyu lingdao yanjiusuo, there are 3000 Chinese characters, 8822 words, 4000-5000 commonly used words, and 10000-12000 uncommonly used words for the eduction. Comparing the text books to the book shows to commonly used words, each text book shows different characteristics in the distribution and the range of the vocabulary. In order to achieve the good effects from the vocabulary education, we must set the principle of the vocabulary education and the vocabulary selection based on the characteristics of Chinese vocabulary it self and those of the vocabulary education of Teaching Chinese to Foreigners.In this thesis, we are going to compare and analyze these text books by the vocabulary selection situations, and find the text book that contains most appropriate vocabulary usage. Also, we will use the Chinese text book used in the Korean high school according to the 7th Korean Education Curriculum, and arrange and analyze the data, and compare and analyze with the vocabulary mentioned in the . At the same time, referring to the vocabulary classification mentioned in , we will perform statistical analysis of the each text books' vocabulary, and find out merits and demerits of the present condition in using vocabulary of each textbook based on the consequences of the analysis. Also, referring to the present situation of Korean high school education, we will explain the scientific standards and practicality which are essential things in choosing vocabulary for text books by the theories of the linguists who brought up theories about selecting vocabulary. Also, meeting learners' needs and considering their characteristics, we will show the standards in selecting vocabulary, and present the remedies for incompletion in selecting vocabulary of present Chinese textbooks of Korean high schools so that this can be used as a reference material for the editors of the textbooks.Finally, I hope this thesis can be helpful for the Korean Ministry of Education to recognize the importance in selecting proper vocabulary, and maximize the students' interest and the educational effects in studying Chinese language.
