| With the rapid development of globalization, translation plays an important role in almost every field of intercultural communication between nations. Translation is a cross-cultural communication, with the author, translator and the reader in target culture as participants.Systemic-Functional Linguistics interprets language as a social-semiotic system, which is realized by three meta-functions: experiential, interpersonal and textual meta-functions. Interpersonal function concerns the interactional aspect of language, which represents the speaker's attitude, status, motivation, and it also expresses the role relationship associated with the context of situation. Interpersonal meaning is realized by lexical-grammar level and phonological level downwardly and it realizes the tenor of discourse in the context of situation upwardly.According to the functional theory of language, translation is not the simple linguistic equivalent transference from source to target language, but regarded as the product of multiple interactive factors, including the analysis of the source text, the dynamic process of text product and the context of intercultural communication. And the intercultural interaction between the source text author and target reader is to recreate or construct a new text with new interpersonal meaning, which is cross-cultural.Based on the Systemic Functional Linguistics, this study attempts to explore the construction of interpersonal meaning through theoretical investigation and typical translation analysis between the source and the target. The basic aim is to describe and analyze translation activities. Within this framework, this thesis attempts to explore the condition and process of the construction in terms of two subsystems: mood and modality system. So, this thesis will contribute to translation studies in the following respects: Firstly, translation study is discussed in terms of interpersonal meaning. Based on the theory of interpersonal metafunction of language, translation is intended to find the reality of interlingual communication.Secondly, from the perspectives of the two semantic systems of mood and modality, through which the interpersonal meaning of language is realized, this thesis makes an exploration on translation activity, describing and explaining the translation activity in terms of interpersonal meaning construction. |
