According to Self-worth theory ,people at all times have the protection and the need to maintain self-worth, under normal circumstances people strive to be successful to get self-worth, but when defeated, people tend to use self-protection strategies to make self-worth from harm. Self-handicapping is a kind of self-protection strategy. Self-handicapping who will be expected to be reduced to failure, for the forthcoming task is not fully prepared ,to delay or receive the environmental choice that impede the performance. Thus, in the face of failure, there is a self-hampered pre-excuse, people will attribute the failure to lack of effort rather than a lack of ability.In the modern education system, college students, as a special, high social expectations youth groups, will be confronted with a variety of situations and evaluation of the success or failure. Regardless of success or failure after the evaluation , the emotional impact brought to is far-reaching. As self-worth and ability of the close relationship, efforts will become a "double-edged sword", when successful, the effort will be considered commendable, but, when failure, and if the efforts are still not successful, will be considered to be a low capacity. Therefore, the students in order to avoid the threat of self-worth or change the meaning of failure, it will take Self-handicapping strategies.The research on Self-handicapping have achieved great success abroad, but there are few domestic research. This study was designed to understand our students'academic self-handicapping in college ,to validate whether the conclusion on self-handicapping research in foreign country can be accepted in our country . The 717 subjects are college students. We adopt the questionnaires to explore the relationships between self-handicapping and self-efficacy, achievement motivation and achievement goal. The results show that: (1) Generally speaking, there is no significant difference between male students and female students on self-handicapping. But college girls are more common use of self-handicapping than private universities boys, private universities girls and college boys. (2) sophomore use more Self-handicapping strategies than senior . (3) low self-efficacy student are more easily Self-handicapping. (4) there was a significant negative correlation between achievement motivation and Self-handicapping. (5) Self-handicapping and the pursuit of success was negatively correlated with positive correlation to avoid failure. (6) The learning goal is a negative predicator of self-handicapping .The Confirmed goal and achievement-avoid are significant positive predicators of self-handicapping. What'smore, the achievement-avoid goal have greater predicator power than the learning goal and the Confirmed goal.(7) motivation-avoid failure , The learning goal , The Confirmed goal , the achievement-avoid goal , have greater predicator power than other variables in research. motivation-avoid failure and the achievement-avoid goal have greater predicator power than the other two. They are all significant positive predicator of self-handicapping apart from the learning goal.
