The Application Of Cohesive Devices In The Translation Of The Adventures Of Sinbad The Sailor

Text is a whole language unit to express the writers’ views. After the1970s, scholars have begun to realize that the translation unit is no longer an isolated word or sentence, but a text. Through a variety of cohesive devices, different parts of a text converge together. The adequacy of cohesion is directly related to whether the information of the text could be understood or accepted by the readers.The differences between Chinese and English languages and the different ways of thinking, to some extent, determine the different ways of text cohesion. When translating Chinese into English, you must have some understanding about the English cohesive devices at first, so as to make the right choices in the process of translation.This article is divided into five parts. The first part introduces the purpose of this study and research methods. The second section provides a brief introduction of cohesive devices in English. The third section provides a brief analysis of the linguistic characteristics of the Chinese version of The Adventures of Sinbad the Sailor provided by the press. The fourth part introduces the usages of the cohesive devices in the translation of The Adventures of Sinbad the Sailor through examples and conclusions from the four aspects of reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. In the final section the author summarizes and concludes the application of cohesion in the translation, which will provides some reference to the author dealing with the translation of cohesive devices in the future.
