| This paper makes a contrastive study in Chinese Sports News Lead (CSNL) and English Sports News Lead (ESNL) based on text typology and Skopostheorie with a view to probing into the translating skills of sports news lead translation, and thus shedding light on the further studies of sports news lead translation.The current research employs a qualitative approach to analyze 30 samples of sports news lead in English and in Chinese respectively from the official newspapers and websites. Through the classification of text type and contrastive analysis of data, the similarities and differences in CSNL and ESNL are summarized, and the translating skills suitable for sports news lead translation are proposed under the guidance of text typology and Skopostheorie.On the basis of Peter Newmark's text typlogy, sports news falls into three types of text, namely game coverage, authoritative statement and sports feature. According to their own emphatic function and translation Skopos, they can be divided into informative text, expressive text and vocative text. Game coverage aims to transmit the sports information. In the translation process the faithfulness of the content should be taken into account in order to achieve its informative function. Authoritative statement expresses the position and tendentiousness of the government and authoritative departments by publicizing the policies or decisions related to sports. In the process of translation, the position and tendentiousness should be well preserved in target text so as to achieve its expressive and vocative function. Sports feature focuses on the translation effect and readers' responses. In order to achieve its vocative function, translations should be adapted to conform to the reading habit of the target readers.The current research shows that text typology and Skopostheorie can really guide the translation of sports news lead.
