The selection of a language teaching approach and method will affect the classroom activities, language programs, materials, teachers and students'roles. This dissertation mainly discusses the Communicative Language Teaching on the teaching of English reading. It begins with the introduction of the origin of the Communicative Language Teaching and its significance on the basis of the presentation of its social and historical background. Then its main idea, principles, prerequisite, patterns and practice are elaborated in comparison to its precedents. In this light, application to the teaching of English reading class is ventured. After that theories concerning reading comprehension, process, and skills are reviewed. And then the discussion on how to apply the Communicative Language Teaching theory to English reading comprehension teaching practice is conducted. The Communicative Language Teaching helps to foster students'communicative language production, and is believed to be an ideal teaching method in reading comprehension class to further improve teaching effects.
