Food labeling means"all labels and other written, printed, or graphic matter (1) upon any article or any of its containers or wrappers, or (2) accompanying such article"and the term"label""shall mean a display of any printing, lithographing, embossing, stickers, seals, or other written, printed, or graphic matter upon the immediate container (not including package liners) of any product. Labeling includes information about products printed on packets and labels of containers and cans, containing products information and instructions. As a special type of text, labeling is possessed of a number of particular characteristics in terms of lexicon, syntax, tense, etc. By analyzing English packets and labels texts, this paper tries to explore the characteristics of English food labeling and the problems in contemporary Chinese food labeling translation with a view to proposing solutions to the problems.
