| With the open-door policy and China eventually being a member of WTO, the English business correspondence play an important role in foreign trade. Therefore, the translation of the English business correspondence turns out to be ever-increasingly essential in the international business world. Many people have already made tremendous contribution to the translation of English business correspondence, among whom many scholars at home and abroad have made the contributions to the theories of translation for business English. However, few studies on Chinese-English translation are conducted from the perspective of stylistics. Accordingly, this thesis focuses on the translation of C-E business correspondence on the aspect of the whole passage from graphological level to syntactical level, and the aspect of register theory.Stylistics is defined as the "study of the use of language in literature" by Leech in1969, then as "the study of style" by Wales in1989. By functional stylistics, Halliday applied his systematic functional grammar to the stylistic analysis, and Zhang Delu summarized that Halliday’s main contribution to stylistics is the three functions of language:ideational, interpersonal and textual functions, which operate simultaneously in the meaning expressing. Another contribution is the register theory which is also used in this thesis as theoretical support. The register theory can be used to analyze the translation of business correspondence. In order to obtain the goal of realization on equivalence of the three functions, the functionalist translation theory is chosen to use in the thesis in that it does not restrict to the form equivalence, but demands the function equivalence. Nevertheless few scholars analyzed the translation of business correspondence based on the register theory; mostly they put their focuses on the studies of single Chinese or English business correspondence from the viewpoint of stylistics, namely, from lexical level to syntactic level, or most studies had a similar focus on the translation of foreign business correspondence. In this thesis, as to the text itself, the stylistic characteristics of both Chinese and English business correspondence will be comparatively studied on levels of graphology, lexicology and syntax. Next the translation of Chinese business correspondence will be discussed, in this part, if the form equivalence can be no longer suitable to adopt, the translation of Functionalist Equivalence will be in need. In order to realize the Functionalist Equivalence between the source text and the target text, the equivalence on ideational, interpersonal and textual functions of the translation text will be analyzed based on the register theory.This thesis consists of five parts. The first part is an introduction, where briefly the research background, significance and methodology and the structure of this thesis are introduced. The second part is mainly the literature review about business language as well as domestic and foreign studies of translation of business correspondence and related studies conducted by scholars from different perspectives. Moreover, the introduction of the business correspondence is given an ample space to illustrate, which includes its classification and writing principles shared by both Chinese and English business correspondence. The third part presents the content of the theoretical foundation, in which the translation method and the stylistic theories are included. The forth part demonstrates respectively the stylistic analysis of the Chinese and English business correspondence, the case studies of Chinese business correspondence. Moreover, the register features of the English business correspondence are studied in order to achieve the realization of Functionalist Equivalence to the original text, which explains why herein the functionalist translation is adopted to use. The last part is the limitations of this thesis, findings in this thesis, and suggestions for future researches. |
