Creative Translation-On The Translation Of Classical Chinese Poetry

Poetry is a most condensed or compressed form of literature. It conveys emotion or ideas to touch the reader's feelings with its unique style. Classical Chinese poetry (CCP), as the condense of Chinese history and culture, has it unique characteristics. Such rich, beautiful and wonderful poems should be appreciated by all the human beings. They should be the common wealth of the world. But Chinese language is very complex, which is difficult to understand and grasp. Under this condition, translation seems to be the necessary media. Obviously there exist differences in different languages and different cultures. The bigger the differences are, the bigger the difficulties of translation between each other are. Translating CCP into English is obviously difficult.In translation, there is no absolute equivalence. Even if there is literal equivalence, they may not be equivalent in meaning. So creativeness becomes necessary in translation, especially in poetry translation. This paper describes translatability in poetry especially that of CCP, puts forward the necessity of employment of creativeness; through describing the origin and development of CCP, analyzing the characteristics of CCP, offering the principles of CCP translation, stating several forms of creativeness, it proves that the creativeness in CCP translation is important and indispensable. It also gives the great advantage of using creativeness that the translation may be better than the original, and also the paper discusses the development of creativeness in CCP translation.
