| The present study is a probe into the translation of legal terminology from the perspective of comparative legal culture. It is widely accepted that legal translation is communication within the mechanism of the law. In the process of legal translation, the translator has to acquire not only proficient language skills in both the source language and target language, but also adequate knowledge of the respective legal cultures behind such legal languages, so as to guarantee successful legal communication between the original writer and the targeted readership. As the core and basic element of the legal text and legal culture, legal terminology deserves legal translators' special attention. The present study analyzes how legal cultural discrepancies can exert influence on the decoding, encoding and inferring processes that are experienced by the translator. The correspondence between the source and target legal cultures is divided into three levels: near-equivalence, partial-equivalence, and non-equivalence. Coining new terms, explanatory approaches, and some other specific and applicable translation strategies have been proposed to overcome the barriers between the source and target legal cultures in the process of translating legal terminologies. The present study also proposes some practical suggestions for the training of legal translators.
