T. S. Eliot played two roles in the face of tradition: rebel and conservative, which were illustrated by the Eliot as a poet and the Eliot as a critic. The modernist master demonstrated his uniqueness by advocating the notion of tradition and order at the time of avant-garde' s craze about discarding the tradition and rebelling against the status quo. The paradox and tension between theory and practice show the indecisive positions and attitudes of the modernists and the tough choice made by the modern intellectuals in the crisis of modernity. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the cultural impetus and historic opportunity for Eliot literary theory and study the dilemma confronted by the western modern literature and cultural criticism and its corresponding strategies.
