The Rise And Evolution Of The Avant-garde Literature From The Perspective Of Modernity

The rising of avant-garde literature in the mid-1980 s can be regarded as the beginning of Chinese modern literature since the new period.At that time,a group of young writers with strong self-awareness emerged,using a new narrative technique to explore the themes that were ignored or banned in the past.They wanted to promote the subjective concept and to bring readers with subversive artistic style.Among the many well-known writers,the "Five Tiger Generals" can be regarded as the core figures of avant-garde literature.The " Five Tiger Generals " people are usually talking about refer to the five writers Ma Yuan,Hong Feng,Yu Hua,Su Tong,and Ge Fei.They have similar creative pursuits during the avant-garde period,and they have established their own independent creative styles.They all maintain good personal relationship between each other and are often seen as a whole to observe the development of the entire avant-garde trend.However,with the time going,the avant-garde literature gradually declined after the 1990 s,and soon faded out of people's horizons.The “Five Tiger Generals” writers experienced different life experiences in the new cultural environment,influcing their creative choices and novel styles.The problem of literary modernity was also put on hold due to the departure of the pioneering trend.This thesis,starting from the creative track of the pioneering " Five Tiger Generals ",attempts to study the development of avant-garde literature in China,and further explore the modernity of literature in the new era.We hope that by reorganizing the former avant-garde literature,we will get reflection,experience and enlightenment on the development of modernity of literature,and provide a new idea for the development of contemporary literature.The first chapter of the thesis begins with the 1980 s,which is regarded as the "golden period" of literature in the new era,and reviews the situation in which literature flourished under various ideological trends.As the most groundbreaking and impactful modern literary genre,avant-garde literature breaks the normality of the literary world and promotes the whole literature from "what to write" to "how to write".The " Five Tiger Generals " is the core members of the avant-garde writers group.They first appeared in the literary world as " avant-garde novelists".The avant-garde literature is a mirror of modernist literature.This chapter also studies the origin and development of the concept of "avant-garde literature" in Western modernist culture and its direct influence on domestic literature.The second chapter focused on the research on the performance of the five writers in the period of the 1980 s,which is the key chapter of the thesis.The “Five Tiger Generals” not only showed similar creative trends in the 1980 s,but also each showed a different literary style.By exploring the narrative worship of Ma Yuan,the sharp writing of Hong Feng,the icy narrative of Yu Hua's preference for violence and death,the classical temperament of Su Tong's glory and the mystic narrative of Ge Fei,the thesis attempts to conduct a comprehensive analysis.The third chapter turns to the study of pioneer literature in the 1990 s.This chapter analyzes the changes in the literary environment and the ideological environment in the 1990 s,focusing on the dilemma encountered by avant-garde literature in the 1990 s.The decline and departure of the avant-garde literature is a mirror of contemporary literature.The emergence of the dilemma has its own internal reasons,but also has practical problems from the outside.The individualized characteristics of avant-garde writers have been more extended in the works since the 1990 s.With the retreat they chose to stop writing,which for the literary world is a series of suspense and regret.The research in the fourth chapter focuses on the creative research of another part of the avant-garde writers after the 1990 s,by discussing the three novelists who still retain quite avant-garde consciousness-Yu Hua,Su Tong and Ge Fei.They insisted on writing and tried to expand the reality and traditional themes in the avant-garde literary environment.On the basis of fully retaining their personal characteristics,they partially compromised with reality,using the techniques of pioneering novels to write real life or historical events,to achieve a personal leap or as a “avant-garde transformation” as discussed by the research community.In recent years they have been given a higher recognition.The content of the fifth chapter combines the overall creative direction of the " Five Tiger Generals " in different periods,and makes assumptions about the fading of avant-garde literature and the modern development of Chinese literature.This chapter provides an overview of the limitations of avant-garde writing in the 1980 s,discussing the opportunities for the development of literary modernity since the avant-garde movement and the dilemma that has plunged with changes in the cultural environment.The current literature faces an unprecedented complex environment.The phenomenon of polarization is very significant: realism has turned against market culture,and "pure literature" has suffered from catching up with the trend of modernist literature and entangled in the fate of being alienated by the consumer market.We want to reflect on the modernity of literature as a whole,and at the mean time,to expand the significance of the avant-garde spirit to the development of literature.Our literature needs to maintain the eternal avant-garde spirit in the era of the disappearance of avant-garde literature.
