Flowers of Shanghai is the most valuable one in the late Ch'ing courtesan novels. Its author Han Bangqing exerted himself to portray a series of common prostitutes in Shanghai brothels with a realistic style. Filled with compassion, he overlooked the fate of the figures, also he sympathized the life of the figures in his work. It was good technique of writing that contributed so much to his achievements of portraying figures that it was on a par with A Dream of Red Mansions. Introduction of this paper collects materials as comprehensive as possible. To a certain extent, it's a sound and referable summary of current research on Flowers of Shanghai. The text consists of two parts which analyze main figures and the writer's technique of writing.The first part is divided into two chapters. Chapter 1 Dead Dream of Magdalen in Flowers of Shanghai, uses five sections to deeply expound Li Shufang, Zhou Shuangyu, Zhao Erbao, Zhang Huizhen, Zhou Shuangzhu and Lin Sufen's pain and bitterness on magdalen road. Chapter 2 Struggle in Downfall, uses two sections to comment on Shen Xiaohong and Huang Cuifeng's character systematically. In the meantime, the writer of the paper points out that there were certain vanguard consciousness in their passive fight against miserable fortunes.The second part is divided into four chapters. In order to discourse the artistic characteristics of the work in respect of depicting characters, four aspects including skilled interpenetration, movieish elaborate style, straightforward style of writing and perfect language are discussed.
