Flowers of Shanghai is the most valuable one in the late Ch'ing courtesan novels. Its author Han Bangqing exerted himself to portray a series of common prostitutes in Shanghai brothels with a realistic style. Filled with compassion, he overlooked the fate of the figures, also he sympathized the life of the figures in his work. It was good technique of writing that contributed so much to his achievements of portraying figures that it was on a par with A Dream of Red Mansions.
