On The Expansion Of “Gong” In Contemporary Elaborate-style Painting

Elaborate-style painting, known as traditional Chinese realistic painting and opposite to freehand brush work, stands as a main form of expression in Chinese traditional painting.Elaborate-style painting has been developing for over 2000 years since the rise of painting on silk in the Warring States Time. Before Yuan dynasty, Elaborate-style painting ha d played a domina nt role in Chinese traditional painting, giving full expression to the valu e, taste and aestheti c appeal of Chinese traditional painting. After Yuan and Ming dyna sty, ink wash painting on china paper has weakened the dominant role of Elaborate-style painting, leading to its marginalization. The pen and ink wrinkle method used in i nk wash painting has gra dually replaced the fine application of lines and colors in Elaborate-style painting, and has become the major force behind the development of Chinese traditional painting.Amidst the winds of change in the 20 t h Century, Elaborate-style painting embraced its new opportunity for development. With the collision between current Chinese and Western culture, a s eries of arguments and disputes concerning Elaborate-style painting arose domestically. Faced with these issues, a nu mber of pai nters and theorists have made exploration in several aspects of Elaborate-style painting, such as the subjects, techniques and materials, etc. Drawi ng on traditi on as a basis and exotic cult ure as a supplement, they have dee ply exploited the connecting point where the traditional feature of El aborate-style painting meets wit h the t heory and language of ot her paintings. While the awareness of individuation is emphasized, they have worked out how to express in line with the spirit and content of the painting, thus Elaborate-style painting with characteristics in the new times, has been created. Ever since, Elaborate-style painting walks into renaissance and heralds its modern transition.The focus of thi s thesis, however, is not on a group of people or a particular painting in t he history of Elaborate-style painting, but on the interactive relationship be tween the person and pa inting, the subject and object in the development of Elaborate-style painting. This t hesis traces back to the history of Elaborat e-style painting through its birth, development, peak, and f all; analyzes and studi es its forms of display and aesthetic expression, and e xplores the inherent meaning of “Gong” in Elaborate-style painting. Reflecting on the current development status of contemporary Elaborate-style painting, this thesis analyzes the expansion of “Gong” in contemporary Elaborate-style painting in terms of subjects, techniques, materials, etc, summar izes its signi ficance and existent problems; and furt her explores its fa r-reaching significance in t he current development of contemporary Elaborate-style painting.
