In the process of English teaching for the college art students, teachers are always hunted by the following problems: No matter how hard they try, there is not much response from the learners in class. Students' passivity is found everywhere. They have no interest in English learning. What are the reasons? Among the factors, the very important one is that students lack English learning motivation. Therefore it becomes an important research project for college teachers to initiate students' English learning motivation. So the present study explores how to initiate college art students' English learning motivation, aiming to increase college art students' interest in learning English, promote their active learning and improve their English learning results.This thesis composed of five chapters:Chapter one introduces the background of the study. The discussion goes from three aspects: current situation of art major students; features of art students; purpose of the study.Chapter two makes a literature review on motivation. First, the definitions of the motivation are introduced. Second, different theories on motivation are discussed. Then the classifications of the motivation are presented. Finally, relevant researches on motivation are touched upon.Chapter three is about variables influencing motivation. Internal variables embrace learners' expectancies, learners' attitude, learners' strategy, learners' interest and goal orientation. External variables in classroom setting include teaching materials, teachers' role, teaching methodology and learning environment.Chapter four displays the questionnaire and process of the survey. The author of this thesis carried out a survey in school of art design of Wu Han Institute of Technology. Through analyzing the results of the survey, the author found that art students have strong instrumental motivation in their English study.Chapter five proposes some ways to motivate the students. It explores the practical approaches and strategies for teaching through motivation research.The last chapter makes a conclusion of the study and the limitation in the study is also pointed out.
