Abstract/Summary:
Second language(L2) teachers’ motivational strategies in class can enhance the students’ language learning motivation. When the students appreciate the motivational strategies used by their teachers in class, they have higher learning motivation. 17 L2 teachers who teach Intensive Reading and their 349 English majors in Xi’an International Studies University answered the two questionnaires. This study aimed to find out whether there was an agreement between the motivational strategies reported by English teachers and their students, and whose strategies had more effect on students’ motivation. The study also investigated the correlation between students’ motivation and emotional variables. The results showed that English teachers could combine traditional and innovative motivational strategies in Intensive Reading class, but there was a disagreement between teachers’ motivational strategies and students preferred strategies. Compared to the teachers’ motivational strategies, the strategies preferred by students had more effect on their learning motivation. Students’ learning motivation was also affected by other emotional variables. English teachers should take their students’ preferred motivational strategies into account in Intensive Reading class and pay attention to students’ motivational variables. The results of this study provide a reference and guiding significance for college English teachers’ motivational strategies in class.
