A Study On Yin Haiguang's Logical Thought

Yin Haiguang, 1919-1969, he was the famous logician and philosopher in modern times. He was the pioneer and leader of modern logic in Taiwan. My thesis try to study Yin Haiguang's comprehensive logical thought that comprises the theory of metalogic, the connection between logic and other domain, the value and function of logic, and Yin Haiguang's status in Chinese logic history.The theory of metalogic comprises the concept, the character, the range of logic and the connection between modern logic and traditional logic. He thought that logic is the science of necessary and valid inference rules. The character of logic is formality, generality, and consistency. The ranges of logic include that truth-functional mode of statement composition, quantification, and membership. There is not essential difference between modern logic and traditional logic. The difference just is that the extent is not same.About the connection between logic and other domain, it refers to the relation of logic and experience, language, philosophy, and science. Yin Haiguang emphasizes that logic rules not experience is the guarantee of valid inference. Logic study needs language, but it researches not the history and the character of language, just the common structure of language. Logic is not philosophy. It is one of sciences and it is very important to other sciences. It is the absolutely necessary tool and to all of sciences. It is the core in whole science. Logic has the tool value and social and cultural function. We particularly expatiate that how Yin Haiguang thought and used the value and function of logic. Logic is the chief condition of thinking and study. Logic can avoid falsehood and enhance cognition capacity of people. Logic is the powerful arm of animadverting on despotism and striving for democracy and freedom.Finally, there is an elementary judgment on Yin Haiguang in the history of Chinese logic. Although he didn't have the creationary research about logic, he contributed popularization of logic to Taiwan. He ought to have the important status in Chinese logic history. The study on Yin Haiguang's logical thought has actual meaning. In the 21 century, Chinese logic will face the new challenge. The Yin Haiguang's understanding and using the social and cultural function of logic offers the new thought way for the modernization of teaching and study Chinese logic and for contribution of logic to our country.
