Su Shi (Su Dongpo) was an important figure in the object-chanting Ci poetry of the Song Dynasty. Dongpo's Ci poems on objects are part of Chinese traditional object-chanting literature conveyed through Fu (ode) and Bi Xing (metaphor) styles. They signal the development of Xing Ji (metaphor and contrast) style of Ci poetry achieving an integrated harmony beyond the artistic description. Dongpo's object-chanting Ci poems create metaphors through detailed descriptions of the objects, leading to an expressive reflection of the author and an emotional response in the readers. Dongpo included both ordinary life and artistic elegance in his object-chanting Ci poems, endowing the objects praised with rich aesthetical connotations reflecting his intrinsic goodness. These poems represent his pursuit of natural, simple, implicit and elusive beauty, or the beauty of lingering charm. He is renounced for his transcendence of the literal objects into expressive imagination. His poems reflect his spiritual life and achieve the beauty because of his distinctive life experiences, thoughts, personality, and ambitions.Previous studies focused primarily on Dongpo's Ci poems of lyrical ideal, scenery and travel, idyllic life, and national affairs, ignoring his object-chanting poems. This thesis focuses on his object-chanting Ci poems in terms of the artistic transmission and conveyance of the content, including the tradition and development of object-chanting literature, and the cultural connotations and aesthetics of these poems.
