From 1990s the creation of documentary film was quite zealous in China so that many documentary works of excellence appeared on our screen, enriching our mind, including numerous documentary film of historical theme .From these works we not only appreciate the historical process in movie from a brand-new perspective, but guiding from original appearance which called 'real presentation' , we realize the development during new period. Many experts and scholar take exception and criticism to the application of 'real presentation' from many different aspects and think more subjective inclination added to and deviate objective narrative ,whose essential feature belongs to documentary film. The dispute about it doesn't cease at all from its creation.However ,when the broadcasting of imperial palace and a series of documentary film, more and more people have accepted the effect of the application of 'real presentation', they realize it is based on historical fact, and adopts fabricated technique to show the 'real' image to audience, during which the advantage of documentary film is embodied. Popular with it, lots of documentary film imitate and copy the fixed technique regardless, causing the creation of documentary film present a picture of miscellaneousness.Unrolling from the history documentary film, the discourse expounds inevitable existence of 'real presentation' and the problem appeared at present and the assumption about development in future from horizontal and vertical aspects. Vertically penetrating, based on the clues for the historic development of documentary film, searched for the origin of 'real presentation' through analyzing the theory and style of documentary film created in different periods, found out the advantage of 'real presentation' through comparison with narrative technique in tradition. Horizontally penetrating, through analyzing the psychology of audience as well as the mission and obligation of 'real presentation' in films of historical theme, set forth my views how the editor deduces 'real presentation' as a dominator.As we can conclude whether the application of 'real presentation' in documentary film of historical theme deviates the essential characteristic of it depends on the agreement or criticism of audience to the image of 'real presentation', whose creator is the editor of documentary film, in other words the all-round quality of editor determines the success of 'real presentation' in documentary film of historical theme.
