| Nehludov in the "Resurrection" is an image easily aroused controversy. This paper focuses on Nehludov's status and significance in Tolstoy's thinking and creativity. The image of Nehludov used to be criticized by the purely political view for a long time. But this paper devotes to break this critical model of the vulgar sociology. Based on the analyzing the original, the status of this image is re-evaluated from the creative history of author. Moreover, the root of Nehludov's character "crisis" is excavated by cultural, religious, ethnic and other multi-angle reflection, and some new ideas about the humanity Significance and the associated "Tolstoyism" of the image are put forward.This paper is divided into three sections. The first section briefly introduces a series of autobiographical hero image in the works of Tolstoy and this regular series are known as the "Tolstoy series." Then, a detailed analysis of similarity between Tolstoy and Nehludov is given in life, experiences, thinking and so on. Besides, the same and different points between Nehludov and other"series"figures are found out in the personality and thinking characteristics. At the same time, the Tolstoy's subjective intentions of shaping the image of Nehludov and the status of this image in the series of autobiographical hero are pointed out.The second section summarizes the source and main contents of the "Tolstoyism" in brief, and analyzes rationality, progression, contradictions and limitations of this idea. Then, the concrete analysis of the sources and manifestations of the idea "non-violent resistance to evil" which was reflected on the Nehludov who is an activist of the "Tolstoyism" is given, and detailed analysis of the reasons why Nehludov accepted this idea, process and substance of his acceptance is also pointed out. Finally, analysis of process of Nehludov's "moral self-improvement" from his life experiences and thinking development is given, and the significance and substance of this process are pointed out.The third section briefly introduces characteristics and performance of propector characters in the Tolstoy's works, and analyzes the similarities and fundamental differences between "Pathfinder" Nehludov and other propectors. Furthermore, the special status and significance of Nehludov in the "Pathfinder" are pointed out. By means of specific analysis for the contradictory of "double personality" on Nehludov, the substance of contradictoriness and faltering tendency including his thoughts and actions is pointed out, and the Nehludov's special status in Tolstoy's thinking and creativity is determined.Seen from the above analysis in different aspects and angles, Nehludov fully reflected the exploration and changes of Tolstoy's thinking, completed the movement from quantitative to qualitative of "series" images. He is the summit of Tolstoy's autobiographical characters development. The major achievement of Tolstoy's thinking, in particular the "Tolstoyism" has been fully reflected on Nehludov, too. Nehludov's experience of "Resurrection" can be regarded as a process which a Saint came into being. He constantly improved himself during the process of repentance and ultimately became a victor of the spirit. At the same time, "Series" images'tireless exploration and author's searching are completed ultimately by Nehludov, and became a Terminator of "Pathfinder" and a victor who overcame his shortcomings. The contradictory of "double personality" on Nehludov is not only Tolstoy's style, but also the difference with other "series" characters. It can be said that Nehludov is a comprehensive expression of Tolstoy's thinking development and art creativity. |
