Lev Tolstoy is one of the most distinguished writers in European literature in19th century. As a great writer and moralist, his works have displayed such diversity and complexity that cast influence on every reader. For a long time, scholars home and abroad, on the whole, give affirmative and admiring comment on Tolstoy’s work, especially on his achievements of art. But where the specific comment goes, there also lies disagreement, which is mainly focused on the relationship between a thinker Tolstoy and an artist Tolstoy as well as the comment on some works. Apart from translating and introducing the works of foreign researchers on Tolstoy, our domestic savants mainly study Tolstoy concerning the social life manifested in the literature, which, admittedly, is far from enough, especially when the subject is such a world renowned writer and thinker. This article seeks to explore the issue from the awareness of "aggregation and harmony"(Соборность), because "aggregation" reflects a belief in God in the works of Tolstoy, which is in line with the fraternity that Tolstoy holds in high esteem and "harmony" mirrors his respect for different ideas in his writing. Through combining the content and means of artistic expression of the major works of Tolstoy "Childhood, Youth, Young People","War and Peace","Anna Karenina","Resurrection" and "Hadji Murat", the thesis will explore how "aggregation and harmony" is reflected in his works, uncover the link between Tolstoy’s life and his literature, and then dig up the awareness of "aggregation and harmony" in the life of the writer. The object of literary criticism is in itself a complex literary phenomenon. No conclusion is capable of summarizing the interpretation of so complex and diverse a writer, nor is necessary to do that. Critics often confined in their eras or limited by personal reasons, no matter how hard they may try, are never able to come up with objective appraisal. This paper advocates a return to the text itself, and to experience lots of beautiful and real things in the works of Tolstoy, and to truly understand the eternality in his work.
