Cai Yan was a very special person in Han Dynasty. She inherited the core spirit of ancient China and formed her personality which was highly treasured by knowledge people at that time by her father's education when she was young. She suffered a great suffering because sudden disaster happened in her life at that time. The knowledge people,who lived in late Han Dynasty, their spirits were filled with the feeling of intense. Such as Cao Cao, Cao Pi and Cao Zhi, they worried day and night about the problem that people became older as time passed by. But for Cai Yan, life was so meaningless that even become a burden to her. Why they had so different feelings about their lives? Because the reason for Cai Yan's suffering is not because she did anything wrong, so she couldn't understand why good-hearted people still suffering so much. The Job in Bible also puts the same question: why righteous people like Job still suffering? The different results of Cai Yan and Job reflect how that question was answered in ancient China. The aim of this article is to discuss why knowledge people put that question and how they reacted to the sudden disaster which happened in late Han Dynasty, through that discussion, we can find how knowledge people treated life and death, and also can find why the spirit of music in late Han Dynasty is sadness not happiness.
