"Marginal Man" In Stendhal's Works

Stendhal is the founder of French Critical Realism, his novel still has the unique charm nowadays. This paper attempts to use Psychology of Personality Methods to analyze those figures of the special colony "Marginal Man", such as Octave and Armance in Armance, Julien and Mademoiselle de La Mole in The Red and the Black, Fabrice in The Charterhouse. With the analysis, the definition of "marginal man" would be correct and meaningful. It also shows the personality and the mind of "Marginal Man". "Marginal Man" is a creature during the initial period of 19th century and a social pathology of the age. The paper further discusses the reasons of "Marginal Man" coming into being as the following: firstly, the individual factor of Stendhal's growth and feeling; secondly, the background of the unrest social environment; lastly, the changed culture caused by society. The paper analyzes the society of "Marginal Man" and the aesthetics meanings through the way of concerning rebelling spirit of "Marginal Man".
