The 21st century is an internationalized high-tech era, an era converting from an industrial society to an information society. We must realize the importance of cultivating EST (English for science and technology) talents and of EST teaching. At present, the EST teaching in China remains at the stage of traditional teaching whose teaching focus is still on the analysis of single sentences and grammatical rules, which fail to satisfy the current needs of training EST talents. Thus, a new and appropriate approach is greatly needed in the EST teaching.In recent years, genre analysis has been a public-concern area and comprises a new research project, aiming at studying their communicative purposes and strategies in language use. With the development of the genre analysis theory, it is gradually applied to EST teaching. As for EST, it has high structural formation, definite communicative purpose, communicative subject and particular topic, making its discourse form different from other styles of discourse, thus, EST teaching is more suitable for the implementation of a genre-based teaching approach.In summary, by focusing on the application of the theory of genre and genre analysis to EST teaching practice, the study attempts to provide insights into EST teaching in China. The research also provides EST teaching with a new thought and new angle to serve its teaching practice. It is sincerely hoped that the present study will be helpful for EST teaching and shed light on further work in this field.
