The Development Of The Occupational Stress Scale For Military Personnel

It has been proved by many researches that the military personnel endure more occupational stress than ordinary person because of the living conditions and work area. Too much occupational stress brings great damage not only to themselves but also to the security of army. So it is important to learn their conditions of the occupational stress and offer a series of coping strategies to them.Objective To develop a new instrument ,the occupational stress scale for military personnel.Methods Based on the theory of occupational stress and the principles of the psychometrics, combined with characteristics of Chinese military personnel we have developed the occupational scale for military personnel by ourselves. Data were collected from 1100 military personnel, 51 of which were evaluated with both the occupational stress scale and CMMHS, chosen randomly as samples and analyzed by SPSS13.0.Results There were 8 factors based on the results of factor analysis, including Interpersonal Relationship, Special Military Circumstance, Economic Status, Job Stress, Marriage & Family, Personal Development, Role Ambiguity, Leadership. The internal consistency reliability( P<0.01) is 0.709～0.953,and the coefficient of correlation( P<0.01) is 0.374～0.873.The correlation coefficient retest reliability( P<0.01) was 0.593～0.813; The criterion related validity to the occupational stress scale and CMMHS was good and the correlation coefficient(P<0.05)is 0.303～0.389.Conclusion The occupational stress scale for military personnel has a good reliability and validity. The occupational stress scale has good psychological quality and proves to be applicable to Chinese military personnel in evaluating their occupational stress.Through a series of researches on the occupational stress scale for military personnel, it has proved that the scale possesses a good reliability and validity. Obviously, it will help us to find out the occupational stress status quo of Chinese military personnel and it is significant to provide feasible strategies to them beforehand.
