October 1941 to May 1945, under the leadership of the Southern Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party, the wartime Capital Chongqing organized four "Misty quarter performance," which created a golden age throughout China's modern drama history .As social and cultural activities, "Misty quarter performance" actively participated in the the torrent of political propaganda in which holy sovereignty and the nation's solidarity were being claimed firmly. The drama activities chose the way to give performance in the formal theatre instead of offering show in the countryside or serving for the army. Guided by the Chinese communist party, this socially cultural activity was to be a stage on which the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang existed as two political forces in competition. Being in the entanglement and interaction with the political forces, the drama activity launched its campaign in the hard situation, having a profound influence in the society and getting a way into the everyday life of the grassroots. Being in the unique historical and cultural space, the "misty quarter performance" showed the richness and fertility of the drama art in the 1940s Chinese drama history, which can not be ignored as a vital stage in the history of modern Chinese drama.This paper is divided into three parts.Introduction outlined the location of the"misty quarter performance" and the related works in thepolitical, literary research. As the CPC-led cultural activities, the "Misty quarter performance "wasthe venue that carried the competition between Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintangpolitical forces. Drama art developed and formed its own characteristics in the unique political,economic and cultural environment in Chongqing in the 1940s. Drama activities show the ability ofpolitical propaganda.The first chapter discusses the leadership of he Southern Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party inthe process of the drama activity: the policy and the leadership for the hinderland dramaperformance; the promotion and the flourish of the"hinterland drama" and the "historical drama"; theparty's participation into the criticism and the guide for the public opinion; drama's tendency for the trend of the market and its influence.The second chapter discusses the existence, development and influence of the relationship between drama activity and the political power. The drama "Qu Yuan" and "Wild Rose" started political debates; Section II discusses the styles taken by the drama activities under KMT literary censorship. Chapter III talks about drama's widespread in the masses. It discusses the direction and the choice made by the activity in the influence of the market, the audience needs and factors such as political propaganda needs. The vulgar or common kinds of drama are popular in the audience; It also discusses drama's participation in the real life and the cooperation of political power, drama art and social life during a special period.
