The thesis, based on the perspective and research of lifestyle theory, probes into the essence of Visual Communication Design by the method of inducing and analyzing the course of Visual Communication Design development from the beginning of 20th Century to the contemporary time, meanwhile, concerns the initiative that the Visual Communication Design is capable of. By taking the initiative, the Visual Communication Design is able to influence people's behaviors, therefore, reshaping a positive promising future.There are three development phases of Visual Communication Design induced by lifestyle variance presented as follows:â… . Industrial revolution began a new lifestyle centered on city prosperity. Commodity consuming became the fundamental daily life routine required as sustenance. Accordingly, a bunch of advertisement, poster, and packaging were needed for product promotion. As a result, the Visual Communication Design was otherwise in speedy progress. Corresponding to the necessity of mass production, art design has to be suitable to the law of machinery. Consequently, rationalism was deemed as the new chapter of the Visual Communication Design development.â…¡. In the affluent society, Consumism advocated people consuming not for function but for symbolic value. So it is considered as new value concept and lifestyle. The Visual Communication Design, as promotion tool for products, reflects symbolic value out of people's lifestyle. Hence, consumism is considered as the driven force for the development of Visual Communication Design at this stage.â…¢. Conspicuous lifestyle propelled by consumism brings about extraordinary consumption to the limited natural resources that is believed to be unsustainable. Therefore the introducing of green consuming will be helpful in building up a more rational concept on consuming, which is capable to emancipate individuals from pursuing the distorting lifestyle of symbolic value.
