News is the latest fact or information cared by the crowd and spread abroad by the media. It plays an important role in international communication. Good translations play the key role in ensuring the success of news report overseas. However, compared with studies on E-C news translation, C-E translation is far from enough, especially the studies of the cultural factors and translation strategy under cultural influence leave much to be desired. Without proper translation, foreign readers will be confused by the message in the Chinese news that we try to put across.The present paper is an attempt to give an in-depth analysis of the translation strategy adopted in C-E news translation and to explore the deep-rooted cultural reasons for the situation.The theoretical foundation of the thesis is basically built upon Lawrence Venuti's translation theory and Even Zohar's polysystem theory. According to them, the cultural position of a nation or of the translated literature in the receiving culture will exert strong influence on the translation strategy. Due to the distinctive features and functions of news and the present low culture position of our nation, the dominant strategy for C-E news translation is domestication. However, at the same time we should always keep our predicament and responsibility in mind, and strive to preserve and transmit Chinese culture in C-E news translation on condition that comprehensibility of the translated text is achieved. Thus foreignization is an indispensable supplement. The examples in the thesis may serve the purpose.It is hoped that this study, a meaningful effort, will help Chinese translators to produce better translations of news reports...
