After the remaining forces of Yuan army retreated to Mongolia plateau, Ming dynasty was founded. The withdraw of Mongolians always cherished the hope to rule the Chinese nation. Because of this, the Ming government built the Great wall, which was about 10.000 li from the east to the west, to strengthen defence capabilities. Besides, they set up"Jiu Bian"which became the main battle field between Ming and other nations in the north. Ever since the middle of Ming, its national strength declined. The problem of Mongolia and Japan became outstanding .The right wing leader of Mongolia often went down south, causing the battles on end on the boarder of Ming and Mongolia. At the same time, Japanese pirates in the east and southeast were getting furious day and day. Therefore, the boarder of Ming was in great danger. Thus articles based on the history and geography of the frontier became popular. In addition to the important geographical position of Xuanfu, Datong and Shanxi, the three towns faced the great threat from the powerful Tumote tribe and Halachen tribe. Being a natural defence of capital city, the strategic position of the three towns was of great importance. Then viceroy Yangshining conformed to the historical trend of the times on the one hand, on the other hand, he investigated the three towns on the spot with civil and military officials in 1962, drawing what they saw on the way. those included topography, vital apart and frontier defense. the work was completed in December, 1603. The book on the map of Xuanfu, Datong and Shanxi was born. The book was made up of three volumes. It started with the overall map of the three towns, then followed by separate maps of each town, with explanation in words. Thus the situation then was clear to readers. The book is of great value. It contains lots of recorders of economic trades between Ming and Mongolia, which lays particular emphasis on the contents of exchange of commodities. The market, scale and transfer station provided plenty of valuable data for the study the trade between Ming and Mongolia. By doing on–the-spot investigation, Yangshining put forward strategies for guarding boarder, which provided basis for the construction of the three towns in the north. Therefore, the map is not only the strategical map of the three towns in the north, but also a map for preparing against war. The map is a martial map, which developed from the traditional technique of drawing. It not only fully embodied the historical theory of the combination of map and record, but also its influence on military history the book. The book stems from the on-the–spot investigation, so it's more practical and effective.
