Abstract/Summary:
In a translation into a given target language (TL), the translation may be oriented more towards the source language (SL), i.e.the SL shining through, which has attracted little attention in translation studies. This article probes into the use of passive constructions in two Chinese versions of A Study in Scarlet published by Qunzhong Press and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. Based on the self-built A Study in Scarlet English-Chinese parallel corpus, it attempts to contrastively analyze the phenomenon whether source language influence translational Chinese or not, then deeply investigates the degree of the "SL shining through". This research sets as its task to prove the existence of the "SL shining through" by comprehensive analysis of the four kinds of circumstances:SL passive constructions are translated into Chinese passive constructions in both versions; SL passive constructions are translated into Chinese passive constructions in either version; SL passive constructions are translated into Chinese active constructions in both versions; SL active constructions are translated into Chinese passive constructions in either version. Through the concrete analysis of the above phenomena, the author finally draws the following conclusion:passives are generally more frequent in translational Chinese, which indicates that the phenomenon of SL shining through is observable in English-to-Chinese translation. Besides, SL shining through may occur to varying extents; it depends on the four circumstances analyzed in the article. The article presents that the "SL shining through" influences passive constructions in translated Chinese, which explores a new aspect of translation universals and offers another perspective for translation studies.
