Physical self, the earliest component sprouting from self-consciousness, plays an important and basic role in the global self-concept. It's related to an individual's perceptions, feeling and thoughts about one's own appearance, character, physical ability, etc. It is not only the motive power of individual's behavior but also the promoter of individual's mental health.Students in military universities are a special group. As college students, along with the physiological maturation, they begin to make new cognition and evaluation about their body changes just like the students in regional universities. They also get to know how to dress up themselves in order to make a good impression on others during interpersonal communication. As servicemen, they have to accept strict training in army. The mentality of those students who haven't formed the right aesthetic and cognitive standards will be negatively affected if they experience frustration because of appearance, physical strength, figure and so on. Since military students are the main force in army in the future, knowing and mastering their mentality would meet the realistic demand of the universities and the urgent request of cultivating servicemen with higher quality for army. Therefore the purpose of the research is to explore military students'development of physical self and the correlative factors. This research adopts questionnaire method including Adolescent Physical Self Scale, Negative Physical Self Scale, Symptom Checklist-90, Coping Style Questionnaire, Self-Rating Depression Scale and Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire to investigate the traits of physical self and the correlative factors among 1221 military students. The research is composed of six studies: the study on the grade and gender differences of military students'physical self and the correlative factors; the study on the correlation between military students'physical self, mental health and coping style; the study on the correlation between military students'physical self, depression and automatic thoughts; the study on the grade and gender differences of military students'negative physical self; the study on the correlation between military students'negative physical self, mental health and coping style; the study on the correlation between military students'negative physical self depression and automatic thoughts. Several conclusions emerge from the current research:1. Military students'physical-self is in the level of"satisfactory sometimes", existing significant grade and gender differences.2. There are differences between military students'physical-self, mental health and coping style. The results of further analyses are listed as follows:(1) the higher score group of physical-self has better status in mental health than the lower score group.(2) the appearance of physical-self is the most influential factor in mental health.3. There is significant negative correlation between military students'physical-self, depression, and automatic thoughts. The results of further analyses are listed as follows:(1)The higher and lower score teams of physical-self have significant differences in the scores of depression and automatic thoughts.(2)The depression group and the non-depression group have significant difference in the scores of physical-self.(3) The appearance of physical-self is the most influential factor in depression and automatic thoughts.4. Military students'negative physical-self is in the level of"satisfactory not so much", existing significant grade and gender differences in both the dimension of fatness, thinness and the full dimension.5. There is significant correlation between military students'negative physical self, mental health, and coping style. The results of further analyses are listed as follows:(1) The higher score group of negative physical self has better status in mental health than the lower score group.(2) The appearance of negative physical-self is the most influential factor in mental health.6. There is significant correlation between military students'negative physical-self, depression and automatic thoughts. The results of further analyses are listed as follows:(1)The higher and lower score teams of negative physical-self have distinct differences in the scores of depression and automatic thoughts.(2)The depression group and the non-depression group have significant differences in the scores of negative physical self.(3) The appearance of negative physical self is the most influential factor in depression and automatic thoughts.7. Appearance is the most influential factor in mental health, depression, negative physical self and automatic thoughts.
