The posture of the prose in the literary genre was determined by the meaning of prose style, which includes all stylistic contents of the whole prose, such as, subject matter, theme, structure, language, style and so on. From the foundation of the People's Republic of China to the late of thelast century, the period of contemporary prose development, writers were looking for ways ofdrawing the stylistic meaning of prose back, which is the main subject of this thesis. From thefounding of new China, our prose experienced a very important process in its development of style. It pursued the aesthetic value again which declined in the 1940s. The construction of the proseaesthetic kingdom which looks the "pursuing the artistic conception" as the center is theachievement of this kind of "pursue". Of course, we can't deny that the defect of contemporaryprose writing which is caused by the history hinders the pursuit of stylistic meaning of the prose. After entering the new era, the stylistic meaning of prose has changed greatly. The aestheticstructure and thought style are different from the 1960s'. It has become more and more ontologicaland diversified. In the early 1980s, the development of the personal awareness resulted in thereturn of the May Fourth prose tradition. In the mid-1980s, people did the new aestheticexploration, which embodied the prose stylistic meaning with some new aesthetic character andled to another developmental tendency——the arbitrariness of the writing and the diversificationof the structure. The prose of this period reflected the diversified aesthetic value of the"self-discipline" of style. In the 1990s, some prose has become more and more popularized, whichis a symbol of the change of prose style meaning.
