The whole paper is made up of two parts:An Introduction and the main body.The introduction states the cause of topic choosing and the ways of demonstrating it .In ancient Chinese novels, owing to some factors, a man and a woman loving each other were always separated. So that generally generated love sickness between them. Love sickness was quite a direct and meaningful type of expression between the opposite sex. Different regions'being cut off was a basic condition leading to that phenomenon. This paper sets SanYan and ErPai as an example to discuss various types of love sickness and separation, the reasons leading to it, the characteristic of it and the literary function of it in order to further understand those works.This paper is divided into three parts. And the author will probe deep into the phenomenon mentioned above: love sickness and separations.Part one: classification of and reasons for love sickness and separations in SanYan and ErPai.In this part, the author first picked out works containing that phenomenon in SanYan and ErPai. Then, the author sorted them out into three categories according to the different status of love sickness people. That is, love sickness between adolescents, love sickness between husbands and wives parting for a while and love sickness between intellect and geisha. Then, the author will analyze the reasons leading to love sickness and separations in SanYan and ErPai.Part two: characteristics of love sickness and separations in SanYan and ErPai. Love sickness and separations is a common phenomenon in literature. It also prevails in SanYan and ErPai. They have approximate or sometime the same characteristics under seemingly different surfaces. First, the mainstream was loving more and missing more after separation. Second, the outcome was always reunion or some other comic result. Third, the separation time was always so long that it seemed there was no end. Fourth, the unmarried youth were prone to love sickness.Part three: literary function of love sickness and separations in SanYan and ErPai.The phenomenon love sickness and separations prevails in SanYan and ErPai. They not only enriched the contents of the two books, but also have some aesthetic function artistically. First, it provided a clue to advance the story's plot. Second, it helped depict psychology of characters and mold their temperament. Third, the story went along two clues after a man and a woman's parting. This not only expanded narrative space, but also reflected social reality and social life deeply and extensively.
