This dissertation is to find out the reasons why the many similarities in pronunciation between Chinese and Korean are more an obstacle than an advantage to Korean students who learn Chinese by contrasting the phonetic systems of the two languages as well as the pronunciations of Chinese characters in them, and more importantly, to present adequate ways Chinese teachers can do their teaching more effectively. Teaching Koreans Chinese pronunciation is an important part in teaching Koreans Chinese as a second language, upon which Korean command of spoken Chinese depend. It might be thought that it is an easy job to help Korean students acquire Chinese pronunciation since the two languages Chinese and Korean have much in common in pronunciation. However, the fact turned to be totally different. The body of the essay consists of two paralleling parts, one of which is to deal with the differences in pronunciation between Chinese and Korean and their effects on teaching Koreans Chinese pronunciation, while the other the pronunciations of Chinese characters in the two languages. It is essential to make the second part separate from the first one, although inevitably there exist a small number of overlaps in the two parts, for the pronunciations of Chinese characters, to which some of the pronunciation errors are related, count when it comes to teaching Koreans Chinese pronunciation. The first part is to find out the differences in vowels, consonants, and syllables between the Chinese and Korean languages, analyze the pronunciation errors caused by them, and last but not least, suggest methods to avoid the errors. The second part is to contrast most of the pronunciations of Chinese characters in the Chinese and Korean languages one by one, and tell why the pronunciations of Chinese characters bring about negative transfers and how Chinese teachers can manage to reduce them.
