The recluse phenomenon exists in Chinese traditional culture. Theseclusion culture is a special kind of cultural phenomenon and the ancient scholaradvocated this kind of life style. From the angle of the development of scholar'sculture, recluse and seclusion culture have important influence and become onenecessary part in Chinese traditional culture. Up to now, there are many research worksabout the recluse and the seclusion culture, but choosing one specific period toresearch and analysis, still have far-reaching significance for it make us know deeperabout the recluse and seclusion culture. At the period of WeiJin, because of somespecial factors such as social, political, cultural etc, recluse and seclusion cultureobtained rapid development; recluse also became a popular social convention amongthe scholar at that time. This thesis intends to research the community of the WeiJin'srecluses, then analyzes their social function and social influence, expecting a newunderstanding to these scholars from a different angle.This thesis can be divided into following five parts:The first part is the article's introduction. Generally describe the meaning andgeneral situation to the recluse's research. Although, the recluse phenomenon havedisappeared today, we can still see the mind track of ancient scholar from theirdevelopment. This will be very helpful for the growth of today's scholars. The thesischooses the period of WeiJin to research. This will be advantageous for us tounderstand the recluse and seclusion culture.The second part, mainly elaborate scholar's concealment in the period of WeiJin Therecluse is a special community of scholars, their spirit essence comes from thesescholar's characteristics. Because of the special political environment in Chineseancient times, tight relationship exists between scholars and politics. The scholar whowants to carry out the personal value must be an officier and their independence alsosubjected to the restriction from political authority. In the hope of antagonizing thiskind of relationship, the scholars put forward the slogan of "the Tao is higher than theemperor". But since the oppression of centralization is increasingly strengthen, thiskind of relationship seems to be weak. Hence, some scholars would rather abandon political official career and content being a recluse. Moreover, in the period of WeiJin,because of many factors, just as the special politics, thought and the system forselecting etc, the recluse want to keep off from the society, but they can't livecompletely incognito because of the economy and other's reasons.The third part is mainly describes the social function of recluse according to thecharacteristics of the WeiJin period. The recluse of that time can be divides into twotypes: the persons who waiting for themselves opportunity and the persons whoretiring from the world. In order to explain this problem more clearly, the thesis takesJi Kang and Tao Yuanming as examples. This thesis also emphasizes to point out therecluse theories cannot classified to the Confucius or the Taoism in brief, the recluse'stheories in the Confucianism and the Taoist is only two different states rather than twogenre.The four part, mainly describe the social function and social influence of recluse andseclusion culture at that time. Because various social factors, the recluse and seclusionculture got a large development space, even influence the whole society, in the aspectof politics, esthetic, culture and social customs etc.The fifth part summarizes the whole thesis. They are not single persons who keepoff from society and have no contribution. Through researching the recluse of theperiod of WeiJin, the recluse's huge social function and social influence are revealed.Therefore, the recluse is the social recluse, they come from society and will finallyreturned to society.
