Yao Xie And Drama

This dissertation researches on the dramatic works and activities produced by Yao Xie, one of the famous poets in the Late Qing Dynasty. Yao Xie is an erudite and prolific poetry writer, whose poetries and antithetical writings earned a high reputation in the literary circle of the Late Qing Dynasty. His research works related extensively to the fields of lection and history, geography, Buddhist thoughts as well as the two fields where he showed the prominent performance—dramas and novels. This dissertation aims at providing an integrative research on Yao Xie's dramatic works with connection to his dramatic activities, adopting the critical approach with an attitude of understanding the writer and reflecting on the Society. Based on this logic, the dissertation makes a comparison between Yao Xie and his generation, highlights the characteristics and achievements of his academic works and objectively comments on his status in the history of literature.The dissertation consists of four chapters. The introduction chapter (The chapter I) reviews those researches on Yao Xie to discover the weak parts of the present researches and to determine the research goals and methods of this thesis. The chapter II describes the biography and fellowship of Yao Xie through the consultation of all kinds of local chronicle, corpora and other relevant materials, and purposely relates the works with Yao Xie's dramatic activities. The chapter III, with a help of previous researching achievements, provides a literature research on Yao Xie's dramatic works Yuefu Anthology by Fuzhuang and TextualResearch of Modern Drama to facilitate readers to further understand Yao Xie's drama researches. The chapter IV discourses Yao Xie's dramatic critical views and his bibliography thoughts.The dissertation encloses with the appendix of relevant research materials on Yao Xie and his works for reference in further studies.
