In the past century, most studies of Mao Dun were concentrated on his novels and thecreative method, the literary value of his novels. Not many scholars have paid attention tohis theory and practice about drama. In fact, Mao Dun introduces a lot of foreign dramatic theories and works in the earlystage of modern Chinese literature. Mao Dun also devoted himself to work for theimprovement of traditional form of Chinese drama and the establishment of new form ofChinese drama. He wrote plenty of comments on drama, which have provided valuablehistorical materials for today's researchers. During the course of his study, some knowledgeof methods about dramatic creation had formed, and Mao Dun applied them in his owndramatic creation. Restricted by both social conditions and personal level of understanding at that time,there are quite a lot of defects in Mao Dun's theory and practice about drama. However, weshouldn't overlook his contribution to the development of modern Chinese drama ,if wewant to observe and study Mao Dun's position in modern Chinese literature all-sided.
