The Tang Dynasty is considered as the period when Chinese ancient poetry reaches its summit. This paper, based on precedent studies, aims to study a kind of poetry which is usually neglected by us, Luo Di Poetry (poems which reflect the emotion of being ousted in the imperial exams). The term "Luo Di Poetry", which appears as early as in Tang Dynasty, has not been given a explicit definition by the descendent scholars. In this paper, the writer tries to restrict the concept of "Luo Di Poetry", analyze the formation of Luo Di Group (the group who failed in the imperial exams) and discuss the production, classification and subsistence of Luo Di Poetry.Luo Di Poetry reflects the social reality of Tang Dynasty to some extent, which includes: the attitudes of Luo Di Group towards the examination system, the influence of bribery in the exams on Luo Di Group and their life after failing in the imperial exams.Besides, Luo Di Poetry in Tang Dynasty expresses the complicated emotions of Luo Di Group, i. e. their perplexity, their abashment, their cherished friendship and their reclusion thought. The achievement of Luo Di Poetry consists of artistic conception, imago and language. Its artistic conception is based on dreariness with occasional vigor; regarding imago, Luo Di Poetry features integration of traditional imago and innovative imago; as far as its language is concerned, Luo Di Poetry adopts words of the following characteristics: a) describing things that are declining or time-worn; b) dark in color or heavy in degree; c) large in span of time or space; d) triggering your sad mood, eg. wine, rain, tear, dream, anxiety, etc.Through the study of Luo Di Poetry in Tang Dynasty, not only the artistic value of Luo Di Poetry and relationship between the imperial exams and literature can be recognized, but also Luo Di Group which were neglected by people in Tang Dynasty be understood by us.
