In a global culture, the study on translation should enter a broadercross-cultural context. It is no longer a single linguistics-orientedpractice, but a plural culturally-inspired practice. Translation studiesmust attach great importance to historical, cultural as well as politicalcontexts underlying the translated texts. The Pilgrim's Progress is the first western novel rendered into Korea. With the first publication in 1895, there are more than 200 Koreantranslations of this great book. A good translation should be bothlinguistically as well as culturally oriented. Translation is greatlyeffected and restricted by the difference between languages, cultures aswell as national power. Thus, it is vital to consider the interferenceof language, culture and power to give a comprehensive analysis totranslation. The goal of Translation Study of Comparative Literature isnot to judge success or failure, merit or shortcoming, but to discuss theinfluence of transnational factors on translation to grasp the generalrules and tendency of translation in a global world. Examples cited for discussion are mainly taken from Partâ… of ThePilgrim' s Progress. The 36 examples used in this thesis are selectedconsidering the literary qualities, cultural and religious features ofthe original novel.
