The Study On Relationship Of Perfectionism And Suicidal Intention In Undergraduates

Many studies on perfectionism have done during the past 20 years in western world research fields and Chinese researchers have now become interested in it as well. Perfectionism has important effect on undergraduates'suicidal intention. On the basis of sum-up and pack-up of the domestic and foreign relevant research and literatures of perfectionism, the study investigated 800 undergraduates of 7 University in He'nan Province and explored the relations among perfectionism and it's dimention, self-esteem, self-consistency and congruence and suicidal intention with the methods of interview, questionnaire survey. On the basis of analyzing the Correlation and Regression among these variables, we built a structural equation model which showed the relationship among perfectionism's three dimensions, self-esteem, self-consistency and congruence and suicidal intention.The study obtained conclusions as follows:Firstly, as far as gender, single-child, household source, academic achievement, family type, major satisfaction and major are concerned, the results of One-Way ANOVA indicated demographic variables can affect perfectionism and suicidal intention (p<0.05). Perfectionism showed difference on the variables of academic achievement and family type (p<0.01, p<0.001). No significant gender differences were found in perfectionism's other dimensions (p>0.05). Suicidal intention showed difference on the variables of gender, academic achievement and major satisfaction (p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.001).Secondly, the result of correlation and regression analysis indicated perfectionism and its dimensions, self-esteem, self-consistency and congruence and suicidal intention existed correction significantly (p<0.01, p<0.05), perfectionism's dimensions--concern over mistake, doubt about action, organization, self-esteem, self-consistency and congruence can play predictive roles for suicidal intention.Thirdly, structure equation model revealed perfectionism's two dimensions not only impact on suicidal intention directly, but also they and organization impact on suicidal intention indirectly through the medium of self-esteem and self-consistency and congruence. Self-esteem and self-consistency and congruence worked as partial medium between perfectionism's three dimensions and suicidal intention.
