Mingzhou, today's Ningbo, is one of the important harbors of Southeast China. Mingzhou was formed in Tang Dynasty. Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasty is an important period in the Mingzhou's development history. In this period, Mingzhou has finished initial development, and became an important harbor. The development of Mingzhou in this period was related to the Sino-Japan communication. China and Japan are neighboring countries and had communicated with each other for a long time. In Tang Dynasty, the Sino-Japan communication became more frequent than before, that took opportunity to Mingzhou which has superior location. Especially at the late of Tang Dynasty, the Sino-Japan communication has changed. So that Mingzhou has become one of the chief harbors of Sino-Japan. This article will start from the whole environment of Sino-Japan relationship, and try to study the position and function of Mingzhou, and the development of Mingzhou in this period as well as the entire stratum's role in this development.Chapter 1 starts from the international situation of East Asia in early Tang Dynasty; describes the transition of the relationship among Tang, Korea and Japan, especially the Unified War of Korea and the warlord in middle Tang Dynasty. Thus we can analyze the external elements of Mingzhou's rise.Chapter 2 describes the change of Mingzhou and its influence, and analyzes the internal elements of Mingzhou's rise. Then starts from the research of Japanese emissaries, Mingzhou merchants and the Sino-Japan Buddhism communication, thus we can analyze the process of Mingzhou's becoming major Harbor of Sino-Japan Communication.Chapter3 emphasizes on the development of Mingzhou during the Five Dynasty, especially the militarization of Mingzhou and the position of Mingzhou. During this time, Mingzhou became the chief harbor of Sino-Japan Communicate, because of many subjective and objective elements.
