Abstract/Summary:
The onomatopoeic words in Chinese have distinctive national features. They are of great importance in comparative study between Chinese and foreign languages and in the study of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Nevertheless the study on the onomatopoeic words in these fields is relatively poor. In the Primary Research on Onomatopoeic Words, Shao Jingmin classifies the onomatopoeic words into three categories. One of them is AB Pattern and their overlapping forms, which is subdivided into AABB pattern, ABAB pattern, AAB pattern, ABB pattern according to the foundation of lexical formation and the way of construction. The overlapping pattern has stronger expressive power than the single AB pattern. So this research samples overlapping forms of AB pattern as candidate. As there are still some questions under dispute such as"what types of overlapping forms can AB pattern onomatopoeic word be extended into?","what conditions restrain them?","do their various overlapping patterns have different grammar meanings?"to mention just a few, this research attempts to answer them in the theoretical background of prosody, syntax and with the approach of semantic feature analysis. The value of this research lies in facilitating and promoting the overseas students'acquisition of the onomatopoetic words.Chapter one: Introduction. Firstly, it introduces the value of the research. Secondly, it introduces the research situation and existing questions in this issue, including the onomatopoeic words'categorization ,classification, syntactic function and so on. Thirdly, it introduces the studying range, the studying methods ,the data fountain and so on.Chapter two classifies the AB pattern onomatopoeic words into two types according to their phonetic construction and capability of extension. One is AABB pattern and the other is ABAB pattern. The latter can be further divided into two subtypes. The first subtype cannot be extended to ABB pattern, while the second subtype can. By further analysis this research finds that the reasons underlying this phenomenon are AB pattern onomatopoeic words'phonetic construction and the principle of harmony of rhythm.Chapter three summarizes the semantic features via the contrastive analysis of the...
