The epistolary literary theory refers to a kind of literary critical form which comes forth by the combination of epistolary writing and literary theory. It appears epistolary literary theory draws its characteristic and predominance to a great extent, therefore, it makes the research on literary theory easier and more comprehensive than before, and has been taken by literators of the past dynasties in China. Regarded as a kind of style and literary critical form, it was probably affected by the vicissitude of times and the development of society, hence it could be seen that the epistolary literary theory not only maintained its essential characteristic but also presented the attribute of stage possibly among Wei and Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties, Tang and Song Dynasties, and Ming and Qing Dynasties, Nevertheless, it could existed some significant differences among those phases. It is therefore that all the same points and diversities have enriched the connotation of epistolary literary theory and made it become an important part of literary theory of our ancient China. In this regard, it probably has an important value of the literary style and a great significance of the history of literary theory.
