With the fast development of economy, science and society, what we are going to do nowadays is becoming more and more complex. In most cases, it is impossible to finish them by a single person. A strong team is the key to solve the problems we are facing. World today extremely needs more and more team spirits than before, and learning to get along with each other in a team becomes the basic quality which is essential for people in the 21st century. In order to promote the comprehensive and harmonious development of social economy and national solidarity, the central government will spare no efforts to carry out its Great Western Development Policy without any hesitation. Talents are in urgent need. How to train talents is a big issue. English education is an indispensable part of modern education. With the advance of English Curriculum Standards of China, to develop students' integrated language skills and ability of listening, speaking, reading, and writing by means of teamwork has become one of the important goals in present education, In teamwork activities, students will be able to help and learn from each other and gain a sense of group honor and success, and thus develop the spirit of team. Currently, as a kind of leading learning style, teamwork has been more and more widely applied in the student-centered teaching practice as a breakthrough and complement to the traditional teaching style. However, the study and application of teamwork in English learning is still at primitive stage in senior-middle-school English teaching in the Yi areas for some reasons. According to the author's document exploration from the 1990s to 2006, the research outcome on teamwork in senior-middle-school English teaching in the Yi areas has not been found yet. As far as the improvement of English teaching is concerned, especially in speaking English, guiding teamwork learning into senior-middle-school English instruction in the Yi areas is the urgent need of English instruction reform at present. The aim of this study is to inquire the feasibility of applying teamwork teaching in the Yi areas, involving the teaching patterns, the implementation of the teaching patterns, the evaluation of the students' act and achievement, the problems the teachers and students meet in the implementation and their solutions.In this paper, the author makes more systematic and deep-going research on teamwork learning in the senior-middle-school English instruction from six chapters. Chapter One: Introduction. The current teaching approach applied in the Yi areas, the necessity of putting teamwork teaching into practice to improve teaching approaches, aims and significance of the study, the scope of the study, the structure of the thesis will be stated. Chapter Two: the relevant theoretical basis of teamwork learning. The author systematically expounds the four theories relevant to teamwork learning and expatiate its definition. Chapter Three: the occurrences, the development, the trend of teamwork are accounted as well as the cultivation of team spirits and the current state of teamwork research abroad and at home. Chapter Four: investigation and analysis of teamwork applied in English language teaching in the Yi Areas. This part is the main part of the essay; it includes learning characteristics of the Yi students, the educational background of English teachers in the Yi areas and a case study of teamwork experiment and a comparison with the two teacher-centered classes and relevant discussions. Teamwork learning is proved to be effective while it has its own weakness in practice. Chapter Five: the construction of teamwork in English classrooms in the Yi areas, it involves elements of efficient teams and roles of effective team members in teamwork. Chapter Six: The author's conclusions are drawn and some proposals are put forward for the application of the teamwork and further research in the Yi areas.
