Criticizing On H.G.Creel's Study Of The Thoughts And Culture In Ancient China

As a Sinologist that throught several important periods of sinology study in American, Without any doubt, the former Chicago University professor H.G.Creel held a place of a great mark in the history of sinology study in Amercian. In his times ,the sinology study in American exactly shorthanded ,the condition and the environment was not very good,but just against the background, H.G.Creel showed his excellent study ability and became an important figure in the history of sinology study in American.He was chiefly study the history of Chinese ancient thoughts,he was famous for his studying of Confucius and Confucianism.anyway,he also ranged over several important schools and characters of thoughts,such as Shen Pu-hai and Taoism.His study of Confucius is of great value and he was famous for this . Through in the fields of his study,he always insisting on studying Confucius in specific historical situation ,and trying to reappear the real Confucius.In H.G.Creel' s eyes , Confucius was not only a cultural symbol but he has ever living in the real world.H.G.Creel correlated Confucius' s theory and personality image with specific historical situation of Confucius' s times.When H.G.Creel talked educational thought,philosophical thought and political thought of Confucius,he was not study these thoughts isolatly,but correlated these on the principle of "reappear the truth in specific historical situation", And the principle also showed in his study of Shen Pu-hai and Taoism. Some of his conclusions of these two parts are questioned.the reason that why I also instruct these is because of his enthusiasm,serious attitude and scientific method in his studying.In order to show his study situations completely,my thesis will show some half-baked achievements of his study ,but the study of Shen Pu-hai and Taoism is the supplement to the study of Confucius.Comparing to the conclusions ,his spirit of query and exploration is more important and I want to show it to readers.The dissertation,with a combined methodology of reading the translation and reading the original work,tries to give a correct judgment to H.G.Creel on a objective basis,and to identify his status in the history.The body of the dissertation consists three parts:The introduction gives a review of the study of H.G.Creels works,and explains the literature and art folkways aesthetic on a theoretical perspective.Part one analyzes the study of Confucius and his distinctive conclusions.Part two analyzes his study of Shen Pu-hai and Taoism and some representative conclusions...
