Since advanced by Ference in 1977, career plateau has attracted attention of western psychologist and managerialist. However, in our country the study on career plateau is in its prime. In this research, by the approach of collection and analysis of literature, interview, open questionnaire, we gathered career plateau items and developed preexprimental questionnaire and formal questionnaire ,which were distributed in Guangzhou, Dezhou, Qingdao and Suzhou. And then, statistical methods like exploratory factor analysis , confirmatory factor analysis, path analysis, multifactor analysis of variance, multivariate analysis of variance were applied for data analysis. The structure and producing mechanism of career plateau have been studied. Main conclusions of this research are as following:①The career plateau structure of Chinese staff presents relatively independent and coordinate,four-dimension structure: Demand-satisfaction plateau, Position -development plateau, Work-attitude plateau and Skill-confidence plateau.② "The career plateau questionnaire " has favorable split-half reliability, homogeneity reliability, content validity, construct validity and criterion-related validity, which accord with the demands of psychometrics.③Based on Schein's career-developing theory, the producing mechanism model of career plateau was advanced, which has been supported by our data.④Career plateau has significant positive relationship with turnover intention, while the relationship with work performance is not significant.⑤The demographic variable like gender, age, marital status, educational level, position rank, work time in the same organization and work time in the same position, except educational level, all others have significant effect on career plateau or four dimension of career plateau.
